Sonja Kill hospital in Kampot

I always avoided this place as various online reviews mentioned it being very expensive for foreigners, who are expected to pay more. However, I started to get symptoms of appendixitis just as my visa was expiring, so I wanted to deal with it quickly. I bit the bullet and took the tuk tuk over, which took about 15 minutes from the centre of Kampot.

There were a few tuk tuks hanging around outside when I arrived. The hospital itself is spacious and very few people there. Various examination rooms are set around an attractive garden and it’s a very nice environment.

I was registered and directed to the cashier to get prices. I was told it was just under twenty usd to see a Khmer doctor and I would be able to pay with an international credit card at the same price.

I went for pre work, blood pressure. No weighing or measuring, I just reported my height. I was asked if I had children, and any covid shots (had three). I was led to wait for the doctor and then she said she wants my temperature. Fairly sure that’s because I’m foreign but it’s OK. I had to wait around an hour to see a doctor.

She spoke perfect English. The consulation was private (just the two of us in a closed room). She examined me and was professional and pleasant. I was told an ultrasound was necessary. She checked for me and said ten dollars and I would have to wait two hours as it was lunch.

I went to wait but was seen in five minutes. Three people, all of whom spoke English, gave me an abdominal scan. They said there is a shadow in my bladder, possilbe UTI and no problem appendix.

I went back to the doctor. She tested my urine which was normal and so I have no symptoms. She then called a surgeon down for a second opinion who also examined me. They both agreed with each other that is might be early appendixitis, but likely a sprained muscle. Observe it for five days and go back if it doesn’t improve.

I went to pay and the price what the same as I had quoted, and I put it on my card. The tuktuks had gone but I called a passapp no problem.

It improved over the next five days and I’m fine now.

The hospital (Sonja Kill) was very nice though. Good price. Helpful. English spoken. I recommend it.
