I’ve always considered the ‘facilitators’ my first point of call. I mean, over six years ago now I was told to get an operation, and I knew I can never go home and found out about bookimed and decided not to worry, when the times comes, I will just contact them and it will all be arranged.

Now the time has come and I am much more cynical about these operations. One reason is my experience contacting MaxHealthcare in India and getting completely spammed, and the other is contacting Apollo in India end experiencing rudeness.

The other reason is that they seem to specialise countries I am loathe to consider, namely Thailand and India. I used to live in India and so know from experience I don’t like it there, and I’ve already had a lot of medical ‘care’ in Thailand and am not happy with it.

There is one main reason I am going to try them and that is that I need also to arrange extended care, and this is proving easier said than done at this point, and I want to see if they are able to help with this.

A few of them cover the countires in SEA I am interested in (mostly Vietnam). I know there is a hospital in South India with a good reputation, and I would (only) consider it if it was a very, very sweet deal indeed (my guess at this point is that it will be overpriced via fixers and not responding directly. This is the first one I ever heard about. The countries and options listed on the first page seems limited. The request for info was easy, but they insist on phone number at the last step, although responses stopped at this point as soon as they had it.

India and Thailand from the sound of it. They seem to want you to fill a form in and will call, which is horrifying. They have an email: [email protected] and so the first point of contact will be asking if I may make the full enquiry by email.

Has a section on Cambodia. It’s based in USA. Again you are funneled into filling in a form and receiving a callback.

Update: email sent and ignored. So I proceeded to fill in the online form with my phone number and received four auto-responders. I went further into the site, chose Chennai India as a destination but received  contact with a centre within USA. This is dogshit basically.

Update: They tried to call me a few times from the USA a few times. Then I was contacted by a hospital that doesn’t do hip replacements as far as I can see,  it’s called ‘StemRx Hospital and Research Centre’ and to me looks shady.

They have a platform (placidway) that you sign in and providers can message you. Placid way connect you with interested parties. A hospital in India called Shelby offered me 11000usd for single standard hip replacement, which is ridiculous.

The implementation (bar the calls) is actually OK, but the prices and the types of hospitals they are matching is not good. I’m still waiting on a couple of them and will keep you informed.

Update: I did get a human messaging me. They asked for medical records. Then a few days break. Then I started getting automated feedback messages asking if I’m happy with the quote (which I never received).

Update: I did have a back and forth with a lady, a doctor. Without records she quoted 5500-6500 single and 850-9000 bilateral.

I sent her my record and she sent me a quote from Artemis hospital. 500 usd for tests and 9500 for surgery (bilateral). No mention of extended ward stay.

I wrote back to Vaidam about extended stay and she sent another quote for Amrita, same price for evaluation and 8500 bilateral. The package specifically excludes extended stay but a seperate note says hotels in the area are from 25usd per night and about the same to eat in local restaurants/buy food. This is useless to me. No mention of employing a carer.

The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council is a government-linked agency promoting Malaysia as a regional medical tourism hub, offering guidance and partnerships with top hospitals.

The online form insists on phone number, and the email is a call centre, and it is only Malaysia… so although I’ve heard the Adventist hospital in Penang is OK, I’ll probably leave it at this point.

Bookimed – This was always the one I’d assume I’d use. I got a message from someone from a company called health-trip.com who said they were a bookimed partner. He kept trying to call me and asked for medical records. I gave me needs (about extended stay). All of this was ignored, and a simple quote (in the message) was 9000usd and 10500, both marked as non-robotic (I presume a typo, the higher price being robotic), and he ended by saying to let him know if I need help with the visa.
