[I ended up having a very negative experience here and I don’t recommend it. Please see my update at the end of the article]

Vinmec was one of the first choices as I was being guided by AI and they can definitely do hip replacement. However, when I emailed them with a query, there was only an auto reponder directing me to a hotline, which is BS and so I ruled them out.

Months later I was actually in HCMC/Saigon and I reconsidered it for two reasons. One is that a few of my other options had dried up, and another was a couple of recommendations  of it as a good option for major surgery. As I was in the city I noticed they have a number for whatsapp so contacted them, and I received a reply back to call because they do not send messages in whatsapp (except to tell you they won’t send the message… within a message).

So this was an afterthought; on my last day in the city I went over to scope it out. I was staying in district five and so it was pretty far. When I arrived the lobby looked like a posh hotel. There were two women working on reception and my initial query was simply if a hip replacement was possible and the price. As usual, I was guided to a consultation with the/a surgeon, which I resisted. Firstly, surgeons don’t have any information about prices, nor any role in the practical arrangements around surgery, so it’s a total waste of time, especially initially. Even quite far down the line, consultations are gatekeeping either tests or being passed onto the person who can answer questions. Doctors in Asia don’t examine patients, read any summary you brought with you, touch you or ask you to undress. It’s just how it is. Basically the fee is a gatekeeping tax.

The front of house staff resisted, but eventually she made some calls for me. The info she gave me was:

Price of a single total hip replacement: 170,000,000

Price of a bilateral hip replacement: 220-250,000,000

I explained I was alone and asked if they have any contacts or recommendations for accomodation and she simply suggested Airbnb.

I asked if homehelp or private nursing could be arranged as an extra. She didn’t really understand my needs (that I would be completely alone) but said a nurse could visit, but it would be to change bangages only. The prices would be  100,000 for a visit but 3.500,000 for between three and six visits (not sure why a range here). Plus, if s/he has to travel beyond 3km the price wil be 30,000 per kilometer. A consultation (I think with a specialist) would be 690,000.

As I was leaving I saw a rotating information board with prices on, some in English and some in Vietnamese. I got some pictures and will include their translations below.

I asked how best to communicate if no one answers emails and she told me to call 02836221166 and choose option 2 for English.

After I left I looked into their website and noticed there is an app. This does have an English option, and also there seems to be a way to communicate with them through it.

So although there are some issues here, for me it is back on the map because, compared to what I’ve experienced so far, they’re pretty good. Also, I’m impressed by any kind of pricelist at all, only the second time I’ve ever seen this. I’m not sure if locals pay less but I’ll try and look into this and comment further.

Update: I finally received a reply to my MRI query I made while back in Vietnam, so it took around ten days to reply. The quoted price in the email is (I sent a list of questions, which they ammended with answers):

Commentary: better late than never. The MRI price is not clear. I asked with and without contast and they give one price ‘no contrast’, which would exactly match the price at FV with contrast, so I’m not sure, but the consultation price here is a little cheaper.

Update: So I’ve been going through the app. It let me register with email and I’ve got as far as being able to view the doctors and make an appointment. I’m looking at Central Park HCMC. They are all listed as 690,000 except Nhuyen Trong Anh.

The main doctors in orthopedics are:

So far there is no information about these other doctors. I’m still working on it but if the guy with info is the same price as the others, then I might have found my man. All of them are listed as keeping regular hours.

Update: So I returned for a ‘Consultation’. I book Dr. Vo Khac Khoi Nguyen on the app as it said he was the head of something. The price was 690,000 on the app but it was a pay in arrears system. So I set off on my 384km journey to see him.

I arrived about an hour early. The reception is bright and glossy like a mall but I was directed down to a darker, lower level that was more like a bus station in atmosphere. I waited in a small room and was seen early.

I had a list of questions, xray and MRI. I noticed straight away his English comprehension wasn’t great and he struggled to understand me sometimes. I asked if dual mobility implants were available and he said they are a standard in all patients (I’ve never heard of this and frankly don’t believe him as they have their own risks and parts can’t be found locally). I asked how long I would be in hospital and he didn’t know. I asked the price and he wrote down about 10,000, which is a lot more than I had ben quoted months previously by the receptionist (who had made calls to get that figure for me).

I asked what type of implant it was and he didn’t know. By now I realised this isn’t going to work, I’d wasted my time and was quite irritated. I insisted he find out, so he went on the computer and said Midacta

I asked if I had a choice of anesthetic, like spinal, and he also didn’t know. I asked him if I should have any vaccinations to prepare. He said not less than two weeks in advance, but didn’t know which to recommend.

I told him I have vascular insuffieinecy in the affected leg, will swelling be a problem, and he said we will do an ultrasound and have anti-coagulants.

I asked if there was any physio given during my stay and he said I’d just do what I usually do at home.

I asked if there was a choice of approach and he said he only does posterior, as this is all he’s ever done, so take it or leave it basically. I have a muscle issue and can’t take the increased dislocation risk, and so that was a deal-breaker. Of course, if they published any ‘package information’ anywhere so I could know that, I wouldn’t have visited and wasted my time.

So I asked him how I would proceed then, as there is no way to actually contact the hospital, all forms of contact are completely ignored. He said there’s a secret email, which he gave me, and assured me I’d get a reply (I never bothered with it).

There is one saving grace with this ‘consultation’ and that is that he said it was basic information and so no need to pay.

So then I went back to the nurses station. There was one nurse there who confirmed there was nothing to pay. They she showed me a tablet with a feedback questionaire one, with various forms of smiling and frowning faces to show if I’m happy or not. This wasn’t private. She was holding it and I had to choose one while she looked. At this point I was just accepting what a waste of time this was but not fuming or anything as at least I hadn’t been charged. I told her I declined to choose one.

She was not happy. She asked me a number of times to choose a face. When it was clear I didn’t want to take part, she glared at me, finally said OK and walked off.

The thing is, as far as I know, this wasn’t linked to a record of me or anything, anyone can just press whatever faces they want, so it really is a ridiculous waste of time. Since I’ve got back home I’ve tried to find a way to communicate with Vinmec with my experience and suggestions and I don’t see it. Perhaps this is part of the problem. All the feedback the higherups get is staff pressing smiley faces on a tablet and actual patients are always invisilbe and unheard.

Overall a very negative experience here. I won’t be back and I don’t recommend it.
